« They are not going to come and eat us », reassures a veterinarian after the destruction of the Saint-Martin-Vésubie wolf park – Insurance for Pets

At least one wolf in this park is dead, but she hopes the five older people who lived in the upper section survived the wave that swept through the village on Saturday.

« An arctic wolf is dead », indicates on its Facebook page the Mixed Syndicate for the Development of the Vésubie Valley, which takes care of the Alpha Park. This animal park, located in Saint-Martin-Vésubie, is home to a dozen wolves in particular and was partially destroyed after the passage of storm Alex.

The Mixed Union specifies that a team was able to go there. « Everything is not destroyed, even if the park has suffered heavy damage in some areas, he describes.

Enclosures are still intact with healthy wolves and chamois. We were able to feed them and they are calm.Mixed union for the development of the Vésubie valleypage Facebook

For her part, Véronique Luddeni, a veterinarian who takes care of wolves in the Mercantour National Natural Park, hopes that the five old wolves who lived in the upper part of the park « were able to escape ».

She ensures that they do not represent any danger for the population. « They are not going to come to Saint-Martin-Vésubie to eat us », she explained. « The wolf is intelligent, it is a social animal, it has plenty of other animals to eat ». However, she fears for possible survivors in the wild: « The only danger for them is to find the wild packs which are just above, and that there are fights between wolves », she expresses.

KNMvD: ‘We are a trusted advisor, not a police officer’ – Insurance for Pets

Sophie Deleu is at the helm of the Royal Dutch Society for Veterinary Medicine. According to her, the essence of the profession of a veterinarian is: care for the well-being of animals, with an eye for public health and food safety. ‘Ultimately, the consumer also determines whether that care is provided.’

Cheap animal products in the supermarket are a thorn in Sophie Deleu’s side. ‘The craftsmanship, space and time required to keep animals, what it really costs to keep them healthy and improve their welfare … Producing and selling as cheaply as possible is asking for problems and I sometimes feel like that powerless, ‘says the chairman of the Royal Dutch Veterinary Society (KNMvD), who took office in April.

Veterinarians in practice sometimes face conflicting issues

Sophie Deleu, chairman of the KNMvD

54-year-old Deleu also sees a cautious, hopeful turnaround with labels such as Beter Leven, new market concepts that focus on the animal and the growing attention for the domestic market. ‘In my view, current livestock farming is a mammoth tanker. And as a society we think we can change course like a speedboat. But of course it doesn’t work that way. ‘

The further improvement of animal welfare and animal health in livestock farming requires an integrated approach, she says. ‘With vets and other farm visitors who stand around the farmer as a team.’

The role of the veterinarian is changing: to administer less medicines and to advise more often on prevention. Does this also shift the responsibility for animal health?

‘The owner of animals, ie the farmer, is primarily responsible for this. We as veterinarians have a legal duty of care. So we take care of animal health and welfare. But we don’t make choices about investments in housing, staff training or any other type of feed. While these kinds of measures often form the basis for the health and welfare of the animals. ‘

You started as KNMvD chairman in April. What did you notice most within the professional organization?

‘Fragmentation and division among veterinarians. Mutual solidarity and membership of a professional organization are no longer as self-evident as in the past and we as an association are struggling with that. Just like many other member organizations.

‘What has not really changed, but does deserve joint attention, is that veterinarians in practice are faced with complex and sometimes even conflicting issues, such as an announced cattle feed measure to reduce nitrogen. So cooperation is important. ‘

Did you also share your comment that cows and calves should not be the victim of superficial nitrogen policy with the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality?

‘Hell yes. And I was supported in this by our supporters. Possible damage to the health of the cows for building permits, you really can’t do that. Still, I don’t want to cheer too soon now that the measure has been canceled for the time being, because which nitrogen measures are still to come? ‘

Has the division among veterinarians been fueled by the arrival of international players on the market who have many Dutch practices under their wing?

‘In any case, it makes the differences with a partnership or the independent veterinary practice greater, partly because more and more veterinarians are now employed. Employers also partly take care of matters such as in-service training and quality control. ‘

Is the quality or independence of the vet under pressure as a result?

‘I don’t have that impression. On a personal level, the veterinarian remains the professional expert advisor and we work well with the major employers on numerous issues. ‘

Yet behind those parties are large investors and food groups such as Mars and Nestlé. Aren’t they mainly looking for profit?

‘They seem to work according to a mechanism whereby companies have to keep growing. And the question is how that will develop in the future. But whether this also makes livestock farmers more expensive for care? I doubt that. Concerns mainly focus on the market for companion animals and horses.

‘We also have an open market where you can choose your own vet. So every practice values satisfied customers. Collaborating combinations of livestock farms themselves are also becoming increasingly larger players. ‘

Is this trend a concern for animal health?

‘The fact is that the financial interests are increasing. All measures for extra animal health and animal welfare cost money. Cattle farmers know better than anyone that healthy animals give the best production, but in practice the financial considerations can sometimes cause tension with the veterinarian.

‘We can demonstrate that prevention pays off, but unfortunately we cannot guarantee that health problems will not occur.’

Within the CowMonitor, the veterinarian checks the dairy farmer for hygiene measures. How do you feel about that?

‘Because of the desired integrated approach, we do not want to be a police officer for the farmer, but rather a trusted advisor. That is why it is important to make good agreements about this controlling role.

‘The Stichting Geborgde Dierenarts’ Foundation is responsible for the implementation of this European policy. I expect she will take a position on this shortly. ‘

In recent years, the KNMvD has rarely sought out the social debate. Is that going to change under your leadership?

‘We base our advice on scientific knowledge and sometimes it is important to give an opinion. So we will indeed be talking more often. ‘

Deleu wants to increase the visibility of veterinarians

Sophie Deleu started her career as a veterinarian for farm animals. After a year of practical experience, she wanted to broaden herself outside the veterinary world. For example, she worked for RIVM for many years, including as head of the National Knowledge Center for Alternatives to Animal Experiments. Since this spring, Deleu has returned to the professional field as the new chairman of the Royal Dutch Society for Veterinary Medicine. She has been appointed for three years. Deleu sees increasing the visibility of veterinarians in the entire chain as one of its most important spearheads. In addition, she wants to cooperate fully with the government, knowledge institutions and related professional associations to gather more knowledge about animal health and animal welfare. ‘In addition to caring for animals, it is also an important task for veterinarians to have an eye for human public health and food safety,’ emphasizes Deleu.

Prepare pets for the time change now! – Insurance for Pets

On Sunday, October 25th, the clocks will be set back from three to two at night. This means stress for pets too – if you don’t prepare them for it.

Even if the sun keeps showing up over Berlin, one can say with certainty: Autumn is here! In the evening it gets dark earlier and often bitterly cold. Our pets also feel the changes in the dark season. They also suffer from the clock change – as do many people. Animal rights activists advise: Pet owners should prepare their pets now for the changeover of the clocks on October 25th.

Going for a walk, grabbing food, playing: Many pets, whether dogs or cats, get used to the fixed daily routines over time – and react sensitively to every change. If the clocks are changed, the animals also face a challenge. If the feed suddenly arrives an hour late, the animal goes hungry – and has no explanation.

“Most pets have a fixed rhythm in everyday life. Dogs and cats in particular have got used to certain routines, ”says Sarah Ross, pet expert at the animal welfare organization“ Four Paws ”. Even now, at least one week before the time change, masters and mistresses can get their animals used to the new processes, « by delaying feeding times, walking or resting periods by around ten minutes every day, » says Ross.

The time change is a problem not only for four-legged friends, but also for many two-legged friends. A representative survey by DAK-Gesundheit showed last year: Almost every third German suffers from complaints when switching to winter time. Most people feel limp and tired, irritable, or have trouble falling asleep.

It can even lead to depressive moods. « Psychological problems that occur after the clock change are not unusual, » said Franziska Kath, a graduate psychologist, in an interview. “The best medicine is also the simplest: rest and a few days of patience.” More than three quarters of those surveyed were of the opinion that the time change should be abolished.

On Sunday, October 25th, the clocks will be set back from three to two at night. From then on, winter or normal time will apply again in all European countries.

Residents of a small Welsh town have mobilized to rescue a cat stuck high in a tree. After several days of effort, they managed to bring her back safe and sound, thanks in particular to a local company which installed scaffolding.

Leanne Skinner, 36-year-old teacher and mother, lives in Tredegar in South East Wales. Last Saturday (September 26), she was returning from a walk with her friends when she heard meows of distress. After much searching for the source of the screams, she finally realized that they were being pushed by a cat stuck at top of a tree of a dozen meters high, as reported Metro.

She immediately called the RSPCA, but the British Animal Protection Association team did not nothing could do. She returned the next day, accompanied by firefighters, but with each attempted approach, the cat would take fear and still took refuge more in height.

Volunteers and firefighters once again decided to postpone the rescue until the next day, because they had no way of getting her back. In the meantime, Leanne Skinner exposed the situation on Facebook, without expecting the incredible mobilization which was to follow. An impressive number of people have contacted her for offer help. Very quickly, there was a crowd around the tree in question to try to rescue the cat.

So, 2 lifting platforms have been deployed. Residents tried to bring her down with a fish net, while others wanted to attract him with sweets. A local business, AP Scaffolding, installed a scaffolding of 4 floors, but the animal remained out of reach. Of the food and thewater have been left at the last level of the platform.

All these efforts ended up payer. This Tuesday, September 29 at the end of the afternoon, AP Scaffolding announced on her Facebook page that the pussy had just been recovered safe and sound. She was returned to its owners.

VIDEO. Three species of fish are back in Paris – Insurance for Pets

Contaminated rivers or soils, abandoned industrial waste… Do you live near a polluted site?

Since the years 1980-1990, there have been major efforts to clean up the water in the Seine in Paris. Since then, biodiversity has taken back its rights. Here are three species of fish back in Paris.

The shad

« We are between Île Saint-Louis and Île de la Cité on the Seine. A place of passage for many species of fish, with a cushion which is sheltered from floods« , explains Bill François, scientific author. Here, there is a rather rare fish: the shad. It is a migratory fish which grows at sea and which reproduces in fresh water. »These fish had disappeared from the Seine for 120 years« , underlines Bill François. The main persons responsible were in particular the dams. Since then, passage zones have been created.

At the tip of the Ile de la Cité in Paris live many fish. Among them: the catfish, one of the largest fish that can be found in the Seine. This is probably the first species of fish to be introduced. « It is a fish that regulates the ecosystem in the Seine, they did a lot of good for the catfish, because they regulated the bream bream and the small carp which swarmed and ate the eggs of other fish.« , details Bill François.

The pike

Bill François takes us to the start of the Canal Saint-Martin, « a spot where there is an incredible biodiversity« . There are especially the pikes which breed there. »So an incredible fish which is a kind of umbrella, that is to say that it is a species which, when it is going to be protected, will allow to protect many other species at the same time« , he develops.

Do you require walking your dog? In Germany it will have to be done soon – Insurance for Pets

In Germany, walking your dog will be mandatory from 2021. If you do not take your four-legged friend outside at least twice a day, you will be fined. The question is how you will enforce such a law.

Because what do you do, for example, with a dog that does not want to go outside at all, or that is too old to walk? In Australia, there is already an obligation to exhaust and for non-compliance, fines can be up to $ 2,700. But fines or not, the fact is that not walking is just bad for your dog.

« What do you understand by exhausts? » It is the first question that arises for behavioral expert Liselot Boersma. Because the enforcement and exact implementation of such a law seems to her to be an extremely complicated matter. « If you walk your dog on a short leash twice a day through the neighborhood, while looking at your smartphone, you may meet such an obligation to walk, but it does not help your dog. »

Liselot Boersma from Hondenlot

Dik Nagtegaal of the Animal Protection Agency also foresees all kinds of problems. « You can say: ‘Twice a day for half an hour’. But that is too much for one dog and too little for another. » As far as he is concerned, you have to take into account race, age. He is also afraid that if such an exhaust obligation is introduced in the Netherlands, there will be great resistance. « Before you know it, we all have dog owners on the Malieveld who are angry about the exhaust law. We shouldn’t want that either. »

Behavioral problems

Both Boersma and Nagtegaal understand why Germany is introducing such a law and do not fail to emphasize the importance of exhausting. « A dog must be able to sniff », Boersma explains. « For the dog, his nose and smell are very important: who has been here, what fell here. Going outside is just like checking social media for a human being for a dog. Unfortunately, I often see things go wrong. »

« The consequences of not walking properly are major », Nagtegaal adds. « With too little challenge, a dog gets bored. And that can lead to behavioral problems. Then you get dogs who will demolish the couch or they become annoying to other dogs or owners when they are outside. »

Dik Nagtegaal

Signal to the Netherlands

The signal that Germany is sending with the law is important to Boersma, also towards the Netherlands. « Especially because it makes us think about the welfare needs of dogs in the Netherlands. Other countries are really ahead of the Netherlands in some welfare points. »

She refers, among other things, to the ban on electric belts in Great Britain, with fines of up to 2,000 euros for whoever uses them. And in New Zealand and Norway, dog owners can include paw-ternity leave for the first few weeks of having a pet to help improve bonding at the beginning and reduce the likelihood of later relationship problems. Animal shelters could thus become redundant in the future.

Veterinarian Martijntje van der Veer

Nice and tired is not necessarily happy

The German bill also states that you cannot leave your dog alone. And that also gives some food for thought to veterinarian and Libelle animal doctor Martijntje van der Veer. « Walking twice a day is really the minimum. »

« There are 24 hours in a day, what else do you do with your dog except walk it twice? » So moving alone is not enough for her. « You also have to get the brain of your animal to move. 5 minutes of thinking is equivalent to an hour running and throwing a ball. The brain has to rattle, which is very satisfying for a dog. Because if they get little stimuli, they can be very unhappy. turn into. »

A study carried out in a Canadian university found a significant improvement in the physical activity of dog owners during the health crisis linked to the new coronavirus. The next step will be to follow the evolution of the weight of the canines and their owners.

A team of researchers at theMcgill university, situated at Montréal in Canada, launched last July a programme national of well-being and of health online. Entitled  » Family fitness mission », It spread over 6 weeks, during which more than 200 adults have registered.

These were the subject of a daily monitoring of their activities during the Covid-19 pandemic. They also benefited from a social support and a health coaching provided on a voluntary basis by medical students.

The study enabled them to compare levels ofphysical activity daily among dog owners and in people who are not accompanied by canines. In total, 29 participants with at least one dog and 68 others who did not, were followed.

The authors of this work first discovered that canine owners had recorded 9 more days of activity over the period that participants without a dog.

More edifying still, people accompanied by dogs carried out the equivalent of 122 km walk during the duration of the program, which gives an average of 3 km per day.

The study therefore shows that dogs help their owners to preserve or even improve their physical form, and therefore their well-being and health, in delicate periods as is the case with the current one health crisis linked to the novel coronavirus.

Now the researchers will follow theweight evolution dogs and their owners over a period of 6 months. Previous studies having, in fact, noted a tendency to weight gain during the pandemic in most countries. Several causes are mentioned to explain this trend: a less physical activity, l’social isolation and the bad eating habits especially.

L214 broadcasts new « terrible images » of a rabbit farm in Morbihan – Insurance for Pets

This investigation comes out two days before the examination of a bill in committee at the National Assembly concerning animal welfare.

« Overcrowded cages, wire mesh floors, high mortalities » … The animal rights association L214 released a new video on Tuesday, September 29 of a cage rabbit farm in Morbihan. This investigation comes out two days before the examination of a bill in committee at the National Assembly concerning animal welfare.

L214’s investigation « shows terrible images of a large intensive rabbit farm located in the town of Augan, in Morbihan. More than 40,000 rabbits are locked up there in small cages on a wire mesh floor », emphasizes the association. In the images, we see in particular rabbits crammed into these cages, without access to the open air, others lying on droppings or thrown in garbage cans. « According to death monitoring documents, nearly 300 rabbits die in this farm every week », according to the association. Contacted by Agence France Presse, the breeder did not respond.

The association does not fall within the scope of a breach of the regulations because « there are no specific regulations for rabbit farms, as may be the case for laying hens », explained Sébastien Arsac, director of investigations at L214. With 22% mortality, rabbits sent to the slaughterhouse after 72 days, a space reduced to the equivalent « an A4 sheet », Augan breeding is representative of French breeding, according to L214. Some 99% of the 30 million rabbits slaughtered each year in France are raised in battery cages, according to the association.

The investigation was published two days before the examination of a bill in the Economic Affairs Committee of the National Assembly relating to « measures to ban certain practices that generate suffering in animals ». The text takes up a large part of the « referendum for animals » project launched in early July with the support of several large French bosses in the technology sector, and which has collected over 780,000 signatures.

Impulse to make healthcare more sustainable – Insurance for Pets

The raw materials agreement states that the Netherlands must be 50% circular by 2030

Making healthcare more sustainable is given a boost with three special pilots aimed at nutrition (less meat), better separation of plastic waste and the importance of proper maintenance of technical installations. The projects are part of the Climate neutral and circular procurement in healthcare program, which is aimed at reducing CO2 emissions and stimulating circular working in healthcare. The implementation takes place under the direction of Intrakoop, on behalf of the Sustainable Care Program in the context of the Green Deal Sustainable Care (a collaboration between sector organizations in healthcare and the national government).

The raw materials agreement states that the Netherlands must be 50% circular by 2030. According to the agreements in the climate agreement, CO2 emissions must be 49% less in the same year. Healthcare also contributes to the realization of these objectives. In recent years, considerable investments have been made to make healthcare ‘greener’. At the same time, due to the nature of the work and their size, healthcare providers remain major consumers of energy, water, food, materials and raw materials. The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport has commissioned Intrakoop to carry out three pilots to stimulate sustainability in healthcare in the areas of nutrition, waste and maintenance. The needs of the healthcare organizations participating in the pilots are the starting point. Sharing knowledge and insights also plays an important role. “A great challenge, which we are working on together with our members in the healthcare sector and some external knowledge partners,” says Ruud Plu, director / director of Intrakoop. « And we set the bar high: before 1 July 2021 there must be a practical and proven approach that allows all healthcare organizations to take steps to make their business operations more sustainable. »

Less meat, more vegetable food
The pilot on nutrition focuses on more plant-based nutrition in the menus for patients and clients. Good nutrition is very important to them when it comes to health, but also to the perception of their care situation. Meat still often plays a major role in this. At the same time, meat has a great impact on the environment. The aim of this pilot is to get healthcare institutions to use less animal and more plant-based food, thus reducing CO2 emissions. Participants in this pilot will gain insight into the sustainability and CO2 emissions of their food and drink purchases. Use is made of the Sustainable & Healthy Care Monitor of Foodstep and Intrakoop. In addition, there is collaboration with external nutrition experts such as Stichting Food & Wellness on alternative menus that are tested on location. The results, approach and menus are then available to the entire care.

Separate waste differently
Environmental benefits are also the goal in the pilot aimed at separating PMD waste (plastic, metal and drinking cartons). Together with care organizations, suppliers and RIVM, a practical approach is being developed to organize the waste flow in such a way that PMD waste is better separated and structurally produces more reusable granulate (granules that can be used as raw material for new products). This ensures that less new granulate is needed, which reduces CO2 emissions – necessary for the production of new granulate – and the demand for natural resources such as oil.

Better maintenance means less energy waste
Because about 70% of all heating and cooling installations do not work properly, there is often a poor indoor climate and waste of (energy) costs. This is shown by research by TNO. In this pilot, Intrakoop is working with care organizations, installers and external knowledge partners towards a sustainable (maintenance) contract for these installations. This standard contract must comply with NEN and ISSO legislation and guidelines and be usable for all healthcare organizations. It thus contributes to the ultimate goal of this pilot: less energy consumption and CO2 emissions, but also more comfort and quality of the indoor climate in healthcare organizations.

The Climate Neutral and Circular Procurement program is funded, among other things, from the climate envelope of the national government and is part of the Green Deal Sustainable Care. In addition to these three pilots, it includes workshops on climate-neutral and circular procurement and the conference Sustainable procurement in healthcare on March 4, 2021, which Intrakoop is organizing together with VWS, Milieu Platform Zorg, MVO Nederland and Nevi.

A look inside Mireille: ‘Our taste is distinct. It can be a blast! ‘ – Insurance for Pets

From cozy apartments to spacious villas: Veenendaal has many special homes. In the section ‘Looking inside’ we take a look behind the front door of Veenendalers. This week Mireille shares her yellow-styled living room.

Upon entering you are immediately surprised by a four-meter poster wall. An eye-catcher in the living room of Mireille and her family. “The living room is fourteen meters long, so we were looking for one statement piece“Says the resident. That worked: you cannot ignore the photo. Mireille does not comment on exactly what is depicted. “That’s the nice thing about it,” she explains. « You can let your imagination run wild. »

Hidden garden

In her experience she sees a hidden garden or a ruin. “I keep seeing something different,” she shares. “We really wanted art on the wall, but that is often very expensive. This wallpaper is affordable and gives the room a different look. ” Not unimportant, she finds: “My husband, Robin, and I have chosen to keep all major areas neutral. That applies to the floor, the sofa and the long wall. ”

The other walls, including the one in the kitchen, are a lot more striking: yellow ocher. “That color combination – in combination with the furniture – radiates warmth. Apart from all styling, we find it especially important that people can live in a house. In contrast to houses in magazines, you usually see a ball or doll lying around here. ”
