Protix – LINK – Insurance for Pets

Protix has won the Dutch Innovation Prize 2020. The large-scale nursery for insect larvae is a lightning-fast grower and a technology pioneer in an area that should contribute to making food production more sustainable, were some of the deliberations of the jury led by UvA professor Henk Volberda. The award was announced on Monday evening 19 October in the TV program ‘De Wereld van Morgen’ on NPO1. The top three also consisted of AI specialist Bolesian and high-tech system developer and builder Demcon.

Protix recently built a factory in Bergen op Zoom where larvae of black soldier flies are reared on a large scale. These are then processed into food (protein) for farmed fish, chickens and pets. It is important for the productivity of the process that the larvae receive sufficient food. To this end, a robot has been developed that is able to count the number of larvae at lightning speed so that the amount of feed can be accurately adjusted to it. In this way, the food chain is also closed: organic waste is used as feed. This way of food production is much more sustainable and more in balance with nature and an answer to the production of animal food that has many negative climate effects.

pioneer

The ‘counting robot’ and the artificial intelligence, in combination with smart algorithms that it has at its disposal, is so innovative that the company has been designated by the World Economic Forum as a ‘technology pioneer’ and this aspect also weighed heavily for the jury in the designation of the company. as the winner. For the development of innovations, the company works closely with a wide range of external parties, including knowledge institutions.

Growth perspective

Protix has the ambition to build a second factory with a larger scale than the factory in Dongen. The next step in a phase of rapid growth – from start-up to scale-up. That was also appreciated by the jury, which also sees a lot of growth prospects: ‘The progressive approach of Profix is currently applied in animal and fish nutrition and has the potential to be applied in many other food value chains. Sooner or later, numerous value chains will have to deal with a stronger emphasis on sustainability. Protix is responding proactively to this transition. ‘

Bolesian

The Utrecht-based Bolesian is also a pioneer, but in the field of artificial intelligence. The company has been active in this field for more than three decades, but has grown rapidly in recent years because it is able to convert large amounts of data into, for example, adequate predictions of the necessary maintenance of roads and sewerage systems. Bolesian’s systems enable humans to perform tasks that require human intelligence but are of an ‘inhuman’ size.

Demcon

De andere runner-up, Demcon from Enschede, this spring, at the personal request of the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport, Hugo de Jonge, developed a high-tech respirator within two months and produced it in large numbers. This to meet the then great need of hospitals for such equipment, needed for the treatment of seriously ill Covid-19 patients. The company, together with industrial partners, succeeded very quickly in reallocating a large number of specialists for a sizeable project that was literally vital.

Pre-selection

The other seven companies in the pre-selection for the Dutch Innovation Prize 2020 were Arcadia Chrysanthemums (specialized in the cultivation and marketing of disbudded chrysanthemums), Binder Green Projects (development and realization of professional greenery, Port of Rotterdam Authority (development, management and operation of the port), Koppert Cress (developer ingredients to intensify the taste, aroma of dishes), Livekindly Collective (developer and producer of sustainable food without animal additives), Mc Energy (specialist in the design and production of energy storage solutions) and Vital10 (offers individual insight into health and increasing vitality)

Dutch Innovation Monitor 2020

After several selection rounds, these ten companies remained of the approximately one thousand companies that cooperated with the Netherlands Innovation Monitor 2020. This survey is known as one of the largest annual survey studies into innovation in the Netherlands and looks at the innovative capacity of companies. The winner was determined by a jury headed by Prof. Henk Volberda, professor of strategic management and innovation at the Amsterdam Business School, University of Amsterdam. He is also research leader of the Dutch Innovation Monitor.

CAN THAT: keep chickens in a residential area in Apeldoorn? – Insurance for Pets

Are hens, roosters and chicks suitable as pets or not? Opinions on this are divided. One person thinks it is fantastic and wants a fresh egg from their own backyard for breakfast every day. The other thinks it is terrible and cannot hear the cackling and crowing. It can therefore cause the necessary neighbor quarrels. To nip such quarrels in the bud, we ask the question: can you keep chickens if you live in a residential area?

Keeping chickens is allowed in any garden in most municipalities – as long as it does not cause a nuisance. If not? In that case, this exception is described in the General Local Regulation (APV) of the municipality.

Chickens in Apeldoorn

Keeping chickens in your own garden is allowed in most municipalities. If not? Then this exception is described in the municipal bye-laws. In Apeldoorn, no words have been said about this, so the answer is: yes, you can keep chickens in your own garden.

Tip? Experts from the Kippenhuis recommend purchasing a flock of chickens. That is a group of three or more chickens. A rooster – which generally has the largest beak – is therefore not a sparrow in the hen house.

Dogs and cats: 4 factors determine whether they get along – Insurance for Pets

getty images

14.7 million cats and 10.1 million dogs live in Germany.

A research team has examined which factors determine whether dogs and cats living together get along well.

They noticed that the bond was largely influenced by whether the cat was comfortable.

A pet lives in almost every second household in Germany. There are a total of 34 million pets, according to statistics from the Pet Supplies Industry Association. Most popular: cats (14.7 million) and dogs (10.1 million). Some say that there are either cat or dog people. But the fact is: the two animal species can in principle live together quite well.

A research team from Lincoln University (USA) has now found out which factors play a role in whether cats and dogs actually understand each other in reality. For their study, the researchers asked 748 owners about the relationship between their cats and dogs.

Probably the most important finding: As a rule, dogs and cats can live together very well. But what exactly the relationship between the animals looks like depends mostly on the cat. These four things promote peaceful coexistence:

1. The cat sets the tone

According to the study, whether dogs and cats get along well depends largely on whether the cat is comfortable. This was also mainly the case. According to their owners, 64.9 percent of the cats and 85.5 percent of the dogs rarely or never felt uncomfortable.

Cats showed aggression towards the dogs more often than the other way around. But the trigger for this was usually that the cat had previously felt threatened.

2. The earlier the cat gets to know the dog, the better

If the cat met the dog before it was a year old, it made them social. How old the dog was, on the other hand, did not play a particularly important role.

A 2012 study showed that dogs and cats should meet best when both are still young. However, the new study refutes this statement.

These cats look just like their owners

3. The dog should be able to share

Another factor that facilitated the relationship between the animals was when the dog also made its sleeping space available to the feline partner. Cats, on the other hand, didn’t really want to share their own bed. But that could also be because cat beds are mostly too small for a dog.

Cats also did not share their food or show the dog their toys. But: if they did, it spoke for a very good relationship between the animals.

4. Indoor cats are friendlier to their animal roommates

If the cat lives in the house and is not outdoors, it obviously helps the relationship between dog and cat a lot. This could be because the animals spend more time together and get to know each other better.

But it is very important not to force the animals to interact. That can also end badly.

Late domestication and body language could be reasons

The researchers suspect that domestication is one of the main reasons cats find it harder to bond with dogs than the other way around. Dogs have lived with humans for much longer than cats. As a result, cats may have a harder time getting used to another species.

Another problem could be the contradicting body language of the animals: wagging the tail usually means joy and excitement in dogs – cats flap their tails when they are tense or nervous. Cats purr when they are comfortable – dogs make a similar sound when they growl, i.e. threaten.

So if you want to unite both dog and cat peacefully under one roof, then you should above all make sure that your cat feels comfortable – then hardly anything can go wrong.

Fipronil affects the ecological health of rivers – Insurance for Pets

Fipronil not only affects ants, termites and lice in pets, a use for which it is sold to individuals, as well as corn pests, which justifies its use in agriculture. It also seriously affects a multitude of species and it is in particular its effect on bees that has caused it to be banned in France since 2005 and in Europe since 2013, only twenty years after it was put on the market in 1993. But it remains widely used in South-East Asia where it leads sales, and in both Americas. In the United States, the phenylpyrazole family to which Fipronil and neonicotinoids belongs represent one third of the phytosanitary product market. The worldwide market for Fipronil alone stood at just over 400 million euros in 2018 and its manufacturer, BASF, expects sales of over 510 million euros in 2027. And this despite real impacts on the insects.

Lack of knowledge of the impact of Fipronil on natural environments

However, little was known about the impact of the pesticide on natural environments. Janet Miller, a researcher at Colorado State University (United States) has just filled this gap in an article published in Science Advances. One of the interests of the study is indeed to have studied the aquatic environment itself and not only the midges usually exposed to this member of the phenylpyrazole family. The other originality of this work is that it is not only interested in the basic molecule, but also in its four main metabolites, substances resulting from the degradation of the original product which is not very persistent in nature and not very volatile. . Of the four metabolites studied, only one has no effect on the environment, the other three are more toxic than Fipronil.

Fragments of nature brought to the laboratory

Janet Miller and her team built reconstructions of fast-flowing riverbeds on 36 plateaus, plunging them into streams for animal and plant species to colonize them. These “mesocosms” were then brought to a specialized laboratory in Fort-Collins (Colorado) where they were subjected for thirty days to levels of Fipronil and its metabolites representative of what is found in nature. All of them have been shown to be highly toxic to poorly studied species such as stoneflies, mayflies and trichoptera. These small, winged insects emerge in the spring after spending the winter as larvae. These are natural water quality indicators and one of the bases of the food chain, especially for a large number of birds. The study shows that their numbers drop drastically when exposed to pesticides. The availability of food for birds is not the only ecological consequence of this pollution. The larvae “graze” in fact the algae which covers the pebbles of rivers. Less numerous, they allow these plants to better colonize the environment.

At the same time, the researchers took water samples from rivers in agricultural and urban areas in five different regions of the United States where 70% of rivers contain levels of pesticides above authorized standards. Fipronil alone was found at levels above American standards on average in 16% of the country’s rivers. But with great regional disparities. In the Southeastern United States, 51% of rivers contain it compared to 9% in the northern Pacific coast.

Are boys more sensitive than girls to the loss of their pet? – Insurance for Pets

Posted on 10/26/2020 at 1:42 p.m.

Written by Anthony Pruvostin the category Miscellaneous facts

Photo d’illustration

Recently released study results show that losing a pet can impact children’s mental health for years to come. It also shows that boys are more sensitive to tragedies of this type than girls. The authors invite parents and specialists to be attentive to this distress.

The relation which exists between a child and his dog, chat or any other pet can be very intense. We see it almost every day, especially through the beautiful stories offriendship or the stories of rescues that we are relating here on Woopets.

Therefore, the animal death is a test extremely painful to live for his young human friend. The void left, as well as the incomprehension of the notion of death among the little ones, are all elements that make the difficult mourning. A team of researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital has just looked at theimpact from loss of an animal company on the child psychology, report Study Finds.

An impact over several years

Conducted by Katherine Crawford, Erin Dunn and their colleagues from the Harvard Medical School at Boston, it was published on September 10 in the magazine of the establishment. According to this work, the death of a pet can cause mental disorders in children. Their effects could even last through their adolescence, since in some cases they can be observed up to 3 years after the occurrence of the tragedy.

« The impact can be traumatic « , according to Katherine Crawford. Such an event is even likely to prepare the ground for a form of depression in adolescents. .  » We found that this experience of losing a pet was often associated with increased mental health symptoms in children. « , Continues the researcher, who adds that » parents and scientists need to recognize said symptoms and take them seriously, not just brush them off ».

Boys more affected

The authors of the study recall that 63% of children living with a pet face loss before their 7e anniversary. The psychological problems linked to the death of the animal can therefore affect a large number of individuals.

By analyzing the data on 6,260 children, as well as the responses provided by them and their mothers, the researchers made another surprising discovery. They have, in fact, found more mental disorders following the loss of a pet in boys compared to girls.

Erin Dunn invites adults to give special attention to this sadness when it tends to last. According to him, this may be the manifestation of a « Complicated mourning « . He indicates that the fact of  » have someone to talk to […] could help the bereaved child a lot. »

The science ticket. Migratory fish, endangered species – Insurance for Pets

Salmon going upstream. (ALTOPRESS / MAXPPP)
#AlertPollution

Contaminated rivers or soils, abandoned industrial waste… Do you live near a polluted site?

Yesterday, Saturday, October 24, was World Migratory Fish Day, notably scheduled for October 25, but brought forward by one day due to the Covid. The opportunity to understand and protect these endangered species.

We know these fish which come up streams after having crossed thousands of kilometers. What we know less are the reasons for this cyclical phenomenon.

They have to leave a place where they are less well than before, because the environment is too polluted but also for reasons of food and reproduction.

Gilles Boeuf, honorary president of the Natural History Museum

And the most fascinating is their mode of navigation in the water. A sort of magnetic compass has been found in the brains of salmon, as well as an « astronomical » navigation system.

Salmon are able to receive light information from the sky at night.

And once the ocean has been crossed, you have to find the river where they were born. « The final approach is chemistry, specifies Gilles Boeuf. The salmon stay in the river they come from; genetic brothers are constantly releasing molecules which act as beacons for its return. If we sterilize the river, he can’t come back. «

Humans also have a lot to learn about the adaptation of migratory fish to switch from freshwater to seawater, and vice versa.

The water of the fish comes out through its gill to dilute the sea water. It drinks constantly. In fresh water, it’s the other way around, he pees all the time!

Gilles Boeuf

Lots of intelligence. But their performance is just as amazing, as their propulsion is more efficient than our propellers. Or even those tunas or swordfish that spin at 100 km / h, in an environment 800 times denser than air, with, it is true, a skin so smooth, that it has been copied for submarines and swimmers suits!

For too long, their fishing was out of control:

In 1800, 3,000 tonnes of wild salmon were fished in France. Today, it’s not even 30 tonnes. And especially overfishing in estuaries: we caught them just before their reproduction, which is stupid!

Gilles Boeuf

Not to mention the many dams on our waterways, and despite the fish passes, elevators – and even fish vacuum cleaners! – preventing their migration leads them to certain death and, on a large scale, the disappearance of these species. « When we see how we treat the living, I’m ashamed in fact « , adds Gilles Boeuf. Will we have time to unlock all their secrets before they disappear? It’s a real question …

Lusebrink sees it as positive that China returned to growth in Q3.

The sales guidance for 2020 has been increased (organic sales growth of around 3% (previously: + 2% to + 3%) y / y) and the earnings guidance (improvement in the adjusted operating margin (2019: 17.6% ; H1 2020: 17.4%) and the adjusted EPS (at constant exchange rates; 2019: 4.11 CHF; H1 2020: + 0.5% y / y)). Calais: hospital helps seals restore health before regaining freedom – Insurance for Pets

The seal is one of the most iconic mammals in the North Sea. After having come close to extinction at the beginning of the century, they are now protected. Every year, the basins in the center of the League for the protection of animals (LPA) of Calaisis collects about fifty young seals in poor health. Every morning, they enjoy a herring-based breakfast. They eat three kilos a day during their rehabilitation. Knowing that they are young seals, that they are growing, the goal is that they grow bigger”, explique Chrystel Gressier, wildlife manager – LPA Calaisis.

A good reserve of fat will allow them to better withstand the living conditions at sea, when they are released. With this perspective in the viewfinder, interactions with humans are limited and feeding occurs behind grids. Despite everything, bonds are created with the caregiver. Some seals came here, they still had the umbilical cord”, She explains.

Asbestos found in make-up of Douglas and Hema – Insurance for Pets

Three laboratories found asbestos in make-up from Hema and Douglas. My Cheek Palette Blush and BAE loose powder foundation 2nd skin were found to contain traces of the carcinogenic substance in three tests. The products are still available.

Perfumery Douglas had to withdraw make-up from the market before because of asbestos and EenVandaag discovered asbestos in children’s make-up from the American chain Claire’s in the Netherlands for the first time. It was a reason for EenVandaag and the Asbestos and Fibers Expertise Center (ECAV) to have various other brands of make-up tested for the presence of asbestos. This turned out to be the case with the products My Cheek Palette Blush from Douglas and BAE loose powder foundation 2nd skin from Hema.

Three labs test positive

In order not to happen overnight, EenVandaag and the Expertise Center for Asbestos and Fibers had the make-up tested by three laboratories. The first tests were carried out by the Nomacon asbestos laboratory in Vianen. When it turned out that Hema and Douglas’ products tested positive, they were tested twice more by the Scientific Analytical Institute of geologist and mineralogist Sean Fitzgerald in the US.

Fitzgerald is an authoritative asbestos researcher and has previously identified asbestos in dozens of make-up brands. His counter-analysis shows that the products BAE loose powder foundation 2nd skin from Hema and My Cheek Palette Blush from Douglas are contaminated with asbestos. Finally, the SGS Search lab tested the products. Ultimately, all three labs tested the relevant products from Hema and Douglas positive.

Asbestos is carcinogenic

It ‘helps with a radiant look’, according to the description on the Hema site. It is ‘vegan’ and ‘no raw materials of animal origin have been used’ for the loose powder foundation. The My Cheek Palette Blush from Douglas promises ‘the weightless, velvety texture that blends perfectly with your skin’. However, if you apply soiled makeup to your face, the asbestos fibers can swirl through the air and enter the lungs through inhalation.

RIVM investigated the health risks of asbestos in make-up in 2018 and concluded that there is a small chance that you will suffer health damage in the long term. A small chance, but there is a chance, says Professor Arthur Frank. He is an authoritative American expert on asbestos diseases. He says it can cause cancer, even though it can take up to 40 to 50 years after exposure to loose asbestos fibers.

Back on the shelves

When EenVandaag talked to Hema and Douglas to hear their side of the story, both companies initially withdrew the make-up. The products are now available again and Hema and Douglas deny that their cosmetics contain asbestos. Hema had the product tested by TNO, Wessling and SGS Austria and no asbestos was found during these tests. Douglas called in Wessling’s lab. He also found no asbestos in the product. After that, Hema and Douglas put the products back on the shelves.

Hema tried in vain to prevent the broadcast this afternoon through the judge. The company also asked for a rectification of this article, which the judge has so far rejected. The company tried to have it published before the news last Monday, even when the judge ruled that the broadcast could continue. During the handling of the preliminary relief proceedings, Hema came this afternoon with a more extensive statement. Hema brought in new information that EenVandaag has been asking for since June.

Different outcomes

The question is how it is possible that three laboratories that do find asbestos on behalf of EenVandaag, and the labs that do the same on behalf of Hema and Douglas, find no traces.

According to experts, the various results can be explained. The labs used by Hema and Douglas used a different research method. In addition, asbestos can occur unevenly in the product, so that no asbestos is found in one sample, while in another sample from the same product. In the case of the Hema foundation, EenVandaag, in collaboration with the Expertise Center Asbestos and Fibers, also had one and the same jar of Hema foundation examined by a total of four laboratories. Three labs say it contains asbestos. TNO has investigated the same jar and has not found any asbestos.

‘Prohibited by law’

In a response, Minister Tamara van Ark of Medical Care and Sport said that she ‘does not want cosmetic products containing asbestos’.

« This is prohibited by law, » she explains. « Make-up manufacturers must ensure that they market asbestos-free cosmetics. »

Lockdown: consumers hoard cat food | Financial – Insurance for Pets

In both America and Europe, Nestlé’s ‘PetCare’ division, which includes brands such as Felix, Friskies, Gourmet and Beneful, shows more than 10% growth. Partly thanks to that growth, the company is making its best quarter in six years in terms of revenue growth. The pet food is not only sold more often in the store, but also much more often online.

The strong growth of the market for dog and cat food can also be seen in the Netherlands. Shelters, breeders and kennels are working overtime, despite warnings to consumers not to rush to get a puppy or kitten for this home work period alone.

Pet store chain Pets Place has « been experiencing busy days since the beginning of the corona crisis, » said Ard Malenstein in De Telegraaf earlier this month.

Not only for their pets, but also for themselves, people brought more Nestlé products into their homes last quarter. This also means that more coffee for Nespresso machines is used.

Much less travel and eating out during the pandemic also has negative consequences for Nestlé. KitKat sales in home country Japan are declining, as is sales from bottled water.

Application phase for animal welfare award starts – burgenland.ORF.at – Insurance for Pets

Political

Burgenland will again award the animal welfare award in 2020. Associations, private individuals and farms can register until November 6th. The press conference on Friday also took stock of some new animal welfare initiatives.

The pet emergency service has been in operation since the beginning of the year. Dog owners can turn to this service in an emergency. It is a cooperation with the Veterinary Chamber. It is about « being able to offer all-round care for pets in five supply districts outside of the opening times of the veterinarians. So far, in the first ten months of its existence, there have been almost 400 telephone consultations and almost 850 treatments, ”says the regional councilor and deputy governor Astrid Eisenkopf (SPÖ).

ORF / Günter Welz

Regional councilor Astrid Eisenkopf and animal shelter manager Wolfgang Böck

For the animal welfare award, winners are sought in four different categories. Private individuals and associations will be honored, and two categories are planned for agricultural operations this year: One of these special categories is about the economical keeping of alternative livestock breeds, the other is about organic farming with direct marketing. The winners can each win 1,000 euros as a bonus, registration is possible until November 6th.

Many animals mediated in lockdown times

While other animal shelters were closed during the coronavirus lockdown, the Sonnenhof animal shelter between Eisenstadt and Siegendorf was passed on. “The course also proved us right, we were able to convey a large part of our portfolio during this time. At the beginning of the lockdown phase we had over seventy cats in the house – we were able to arrange all of them, and also a lot of dogs ”, says managing director Wolfgang Böck. 120 animals are currently housed.

your pet is a real stress reliever! – Insurance for Pets

The confinement period is not that far away and has been a source of stress for many.

But according to researchers at the University of York and Lincoln in Britain, people with pets have been less exposed to this anxiety.

The authors reveal that having a pet went hand in hand with better mental health and reduced loneliness. And whatever the animal, dog, cat… or even fish or even guinea pig!

In detail, 6,000 animal owners were questioned about their morale during confinement.

Result: 90% say their partner has helped them cope emotionally and 96% say it has helped them stay physically fit.

On the other hand, they were also a source of anxiety, 68% were worried, in particular because of the restrictions on access to veterinary care.

Faced with these results, scientists do not encourage the general public to adopt for the sole purpose of mentally protecting themselves from the pandemic. This is an acquisition that must be assumed.

« It is important that everyone appreciates the needs of their animal, because our other work shows that the fact of not meeting them can have a harmful effect, as much for the people as for the animal ».

A robot dolphin for dolphinariums – Insurance for Pets

In the heart of Hollywood (United States), a dolphin like no other was born in an animation studio: it is a robot, intended for water parks to replace dolphins captured alive. « If your usual day is swimming a hundred kilometers in the ocean and you find yourself in 23 meters, and that is your existence, it’s such an artificial environment and you can put it in blue and similar to the ocean, but you are still a roaming sociable animal confined to a tub« , warns Walt Conti, founder and CEO of Edge Innovations.

But can a robot replace a real dolphin? « In many ways, it’s the same thing, assures a technician. If you use live dolphins, you have to capture and train them. When we create robots, we do exactly the same thing: the only difference is that there is no breeding to do, you don’t have to feed them and you don’t have to to worry about the safety of human beingsEach copy is sold for 26 million dollars; China could be the first buyer.

Where is the air cleaner than on our floriculture companies? – Insurance for Pets

« Have you discovered the #Strelitzia plants anywhere in this clip? » It was a question from a strelitzia growing colleague on Twitter, with a link to a video from the Flower Council of Holland. It was Saturday morning, so I had time. At 1:06 am I saw them pass by. « Sharp! »

I had not watched the video before, but it was already launched in 2018 on Mooiwatplantendoen.nl. It is part of a campaign that aims to raise awareness of how much influence plants have on our well-being. We growers have known that for a long time, of course. Nowhere else so many relaxed people as in a flower or plant greenhouse. Where is the air cleaner, the stress less, and the holiday feeling greater than at our floriculture companies? Just sayin.

I myself have known that from an early age. My mother still has a big plant heart. Figuratively then eh. I don’t know anything other than that cyclamen got a foot bath on a saucer. Woman’s tongues used to fill the windowsill. Ferns curled their leaves. Deer horns were not animal but vegetable to me. And in winter there were even flowers on the windows. The love for green is in our DNA.

Yet she dealt with plants differently than I encountered in the video. “They’ve taken care of us since the beginning of time. Thank you plant for the oxygen I breathe. Thank you plant for your coolness in the summer. That you don’t say anything when I’m out hunting for a snack at night. For making my house a home, thank you plant. For forgiving me when I came in with that guy from Sales. After that drink, remember? In short, that you are more than a plant, thank you plant. ‘

I can laugh about it. Who does not recognize certain things in it? Plants, flowers, music, art, it can move you, encourage you, help you through a difficult period. ‘Music was my first love and it will be my last.’ That could be music by John Miles or by JS Bach.

Still, I prefer to look for Who is behind all those presents and gifts. My mother taught me that from a young age. Thanks Mom.

Corona macht selbst Haustier-Muffel zu Hundefans – Insurance for Pets

Moreover, his mistress is not the only one to benefit from his benevolence ; as soon as he feels that a animal is in trouble, comes spontaneously in aide and the comfort.

On a very cold winter day, Whitney walked Banner not far from home when the dog went headed for the woods along the road. He was luring his owner to a specific location and finally stopped in front of a cardboard box. He then began to turn around.

The young woman then opened it in her turn and took out 6 others very young felines. The poor little cats were frigorifiés. They didn’t even have the strength to meow. Spanish scientist’s medicine can save millions of lives – Insurance for Pets

© The Country

Spanish biotechnologist and immunologist César de la Fuente, together with a research team, has succeeded in turning wasp venom into a synthetic antibiotic that eliminates multidrug-resistant bacteria. The research results are promising, because 80 percent of the mice that were given the antibiotic in the study survived an infection with resistant bacteria.

Medicine can save millions of lives

In the study, De la Fuente rearranged the molecular structure of the wasp venom making it harmless to humans, but deadly to resistant bacteria. If approved, the drug can be used for hundreds of different types of infectious diseases and can save millions of lives worldwide.

José Miguel Cisneros, head of the Infectious Diseases Department at the Hospital Virgen del Rocío in Seville, is enthusiastic about the research results from de la Fuente. According to Cisneros, this is a distinctive and innovative approach to one of the biggest issues in global healthcare.

Untreatable infections are the leading cause of death

Due to the lack of an effective and safe antibiotic, more than 35,000 people die each year in Spain alone from an infection with multi-resistant bacteria. Worldwide, this is 700 thousand per year, a number that will increase considerably in the future without the arrival of an effective drug. According to a WHO calculation, in 2050 without effective antibiotics, 10 million people per year will die from an untreatable infection. In thirty years, infection with multi-resistant bacteria will thus become the number one cause of death.

De la Fuente reports that the antibiotic effect of the wasp venom, known in scientific circles as Vespula Lewisii, has been known for many years, but its extreme toxicity has prevented its medicinal use until now. By rearranging the molecules in the poison, de la Fuente succeeded in eliminating this harmful effect.

Double effect

The wasp venom is not only antibiotic, but also has anti-inflammatory properties. This makes the effectiveness of the wasp venom even stronger, because infections always provoke inflammatory reactions. It is precisely these inflammatory reactions that can cause people to become seriously ill and eventually die.

It is the first time that animal poison has been used in the development of an antibiotic. The next step in the research is the preclinical phase, in which the antibiotic is tested on test subjects. This testing phase will still take some time, but if all goes well, this drug could save millions of lives worldwide.

ZACO A9s: innovative robot vacuum cleaner with mopping function – Insurance for Pets

Robot vacuum cleaners are the ideal aid in the household. No hassle with cables and large appliances that get stuck behind the sofa. ZACO is a relatively new player in the Benelux in the field of robot vacuum cleaners and we are therefore very curious about the results. We got to test the showpiece, the A9s!

The benefits of a robot vacuum cleaner

Cleaning isn’t a hobby for anyone, right? No matter how big your family is, cleaning needs to be done everywhere. Especially when there are also pets walking around! The advantage of a robot vacuum cleaner is that you switch it on and the robot then does the work itself. Just raise your feet and you’re done. It saves a lot of time, especially since you can run the robot whenever you want.

ZACO A9s

The A9s is the latest cleaning robot from the ZACO brand, previously known as iLife. This robot is full of the latest techniques. It is equipped with a 360 degree camera with which a room is scanned in 3D. For example, the A9s draws the smartest route all by itself to make the space as clean as possible. With the large 600 ml waste container, it can make a big round in the house. Also ideal when you have pets (or children ..) walking around.

The A9s also features a mopping function. The Active Mop Function ensures that the robot vacuum cleaner mops by means of vibrations. This allows the mop to absorb more dirt than with a single wipe. Mopping yourself is also a thing of the past with a ZACO robot vacuum cleaner.

Specifications

  • Vacuum cleaner, mop and sweeper in one
  • Dimensions: 330×76 mm
  • Contamination of dirt reservoir: 600 ml
  • Content water tank: 300 ml
  • Clean up to 120 minutes
  • Autocleaning adjustable per minute
  • PanoView camera 360 degree camera
  • Active Mop Function
  • Amazon Alexa Voice control
  • Operable with the ZACO Robot app
  • 4 different modes: automatic (PanoView 2.0), spot, edge and max

First use

Opening the box reveals an impressive device. In fact, it shouldn’t matter what a robotic vacuum cleaner looks like, as long as it does its job. Still, the A9s is a nice-looking device that you can leave in its docking station in the room.

Its charging station can be placed neatly in a corner and connected via the socket. We let the A9s do its first lap. It is striking that he is clearly ‘getting to know’ the room in the first instance. With the PanoView 2.0 function, he makes a 3D map of his working field. Of course we also test the drop sensor. It stops neatly along the edge of the stairs and then turns around.

It is equipped with a rotating brush at the bottom that can clearly bring in a lot of dirt, dust and hair. If you have an allergy, it is good to know that it also has a fine dust filter, which in addition to dust particles also takes mite excrement and fine dust with you.

There are quite a few dog hairs floating around in this household. Normally we should vacuum every day with the ‘normal’ vacuum cleaner. It is great to have this ZACO robot vacuum cleaner drive around every day and let it do the work. And he does that surprisingly well to be honest! A disadvantage is that a robot of course does not take the chairs, sofa and everything higher than the ground.

The waste container is easy to remove with the push button on top of the robot. Then you open the lid and you can easily throw the waste in the garbage can. ZACO indicates that, depending on the use, the filter and the brushes last for about 6 months.

Mopping

Of course we also subjected the A9s to a mopping test! In a household with a dog, that is not an unnecessary luxury to do regularly. To use the mop function, attach a clean and dry mop to the mop holder on the bottom of the robot. These are supplied as standard. Then you fill the water reservoir with water. The water reservoir is also supplied as standard and is different from the dust reservoir. Then you operate it as you do when vacuuming and it makes the same round.

I am also satisfied with the mopping function. But because you are not allowed to use cleaning products in the robot, it is nevertheless necessary to occasionally work with an extra thorough mopping in addition to the robot.

De ZACO Robot App

With the accompanying ZACO Robot App, you can easily operate all functionalities on the A9s. Just like with a television remote control. For example, you can choose auto mode or use the remote. The robot can also be manually driven to a specific location. The different modes Max Mode, Edge Mode and Spot Cleaning can also be selected.

In addition, while cleaning you can see a map of where the A9s has been, view the Cleaning History and view the battery level. In Schedule Mode you plan a day and time when the A9s has to start cleaning. For example, we let him do his rounds every day at 4 p.m. With Water Level Control you can set how much water the robot uses when mopping. This is useful, for example, when extra thorough cleaning is required.

Robot vacuum cleaners from ZACO

The A9s is available in the ZACO webshop for a price of 379 euros. If you put this next to a competitor such as iRobot, the price is considerably lower for equivalent functions. The A9s does its job more than well and delivers good (clean!) Results. But our conclusion is that in some situations a ‘normal’ vacuum cleaner and mop next to it will remain necessary.

libraries, allies of the mental well-being of students – Insurance for Pets

Confinement, health measures and fear of contamination, of loved ones or of oneself, all linked to Covid, have a definite effect on mental health. In this area, libraries can do a lot for students, shows a study of activities undertaken by UK university libraries in recent months.

Andrew Cox and Liz Brewster, two researchers at the University of Sheffield and Lancaster University, respectively, looked at the actions libraries have taken to communicate with students since the start of the pandemic, the resources offered and support for well-being and health.

A questionnaire of twenty questions was sent to various British university libraries last May, a few weeks after a peak in infections in the United Kingdom. All the establishments then closed their doors, and the link maintained with users was therefore purely virtual. 53 completed questionnaires, representing a total of 50 institutions, were used for this study.

Even before the pandemic, university libraries had the well-being of students at heart, through a variety of more or less original actions. Recommendations for personal development books, cards and posters inviting you to take a break, a physical space dedicated to well-being in the establishment, or even contact with a pet that is part of these operations.

For 46% of the libraries that responded, these activities were part of the general strategy of the university, or, for 20%, they responded to a request from the students themselves. For a very large majority, these actions were implemented to come to calm the anxiety and the concerns of the students, but also to reinforce the feeling of belonging to the university establishment.

Documentary support during the pandemic

Given the academic nature of libraries, their primary concern was to maintain access to digital educational resources (90%). But the dissemination of reassuring messages on social networks (88%) or the cancellation of fines (85%). There are also small attentions such as reporting online resources, especially audiovisual (65%) or books on well-being (60%).

The library’s website, networks like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram were the most commonly used communication channels.

48% of libraries report thank you messages, in return, and 48% are happy with the number of accesses to the resources presented. However, 28% of respondents report that they do not assess the success of their wellness activities.

The researchers note that libraries can serve the well-being of students through different types of activities: those relating to the usual missions of libraries, by creating new, tailor-made services in the reception of students, within buildings, but also by pointing out services offered by other institutions, within or outside the university.

The entire study, in English, is available at this address.

they protest against the ban on wild animals in shows – Insurance for Pets

Roger Falck, trainer of the Piste aux étoiles circus, has lived alongside his tigers and lions since he was five years old. Over the years, he has learned to tame them. « For animal associations, having an animal in captivity is mistreatment […] Today, we present the complicity that there can be between man and animal« , he defends. The law which would ban wild animals in circuses calls into question his way of life and his working tool.

The traveling circus trucks have been stationary for seven months because of the coronavirus. This is a first for the Falck family, who, since 1804, have traveled across France to offer their shows. The family affirms it: never, in its circus, an animal was mistreated. But the cases of violence revealed in other circuses discredit the entire profession. According to conservationists, wild animals have nothing to do in captivity. Roger Falck sees things differently: « They are wild animals, but domesticated. «

Sustainable care is given impetus with pilots for nutrition, waste and maintenance – Insurance for Pets

Making healthcare more sustainable is given a boost with three special pilots aimed at nutrition (less meat), better separation of plastic waste and the importance of proper maintenance of technical installations. The projects are part of the Climate neutral and circular procurement in healthcare program, which is aimed at reducing CO2 emissions and stimulating circular working in healthcare. The implementation takes place under the direction of Intrakoop, on behalf of the Sustainable Care Program in the context of the Green Deal Sustainable Care (a collaboration between sector organizations in healthcare and the national government).

The raw materials agreement states that the Netherlands must be 50% circular by 2030. According to the agreements in the climate agreement, CO2 emissions must be 49% less in the same year. Healthcare also contributes to the realization of these objectives. In recent years, considerable investments have been made to make healthcare ‘greener’. At the same time, due to the nature of the work and their size, healthcare providers remain major consumers of energy, water, food, materials and raw materials.

The Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport has commissioned Intrakoop to conduct three pilots to stimulate sustainability in healthcare in the areas of nutrition, waste and maintenance. The needs of the healthcare organizations participating in the pilots are the starting point.

Sharing knowledge and insights also plays an important role. “A great challenge, which we are working on together with our members in the healthcare sector and some external knowledge partners,” says Ruud Plu, director / director of Intrakoop. « And we set the bar high: before 1 July 2021 there must be a practical and proven approach that allows all healthcare organizations to take steps to make their business operations more sustainable. »

Less meat, more vegetable food

The pilot on nutrition focuses on more plant-based nutrition in the menus for patients and clients. Good nutrition is very important to them when it comes to health, but also to the perception of their care situation. Meat still often plays a major role in this. At the same time, meat has a great impact on the environment. The aim of this pilot is to get healthcare institutions to use less animal and more plant-based food, thus reducing CO2 emissions. Participants in this pilot will gain insight into the sustainability and CO2 emissions of their food and drink purchases. Use is made of the Sustainable & Healthy Care Monitor of Foodstep and Intrakoop.

In addition, there is collaboration with external nutrition experts such as Stichting Food & Welfare on alternative menus that are tested on location. The results, approach and menus are then available to the entire care.

Separate waste differently

Environmental benefits are also the goal in the pilot aimed at separating PMD waste (plastic, metal and drinking cartons). Together with healthcare organizations, suppliers and RIVM, a practical approach is being developed to organize the waste flow in such a way that PMD waste is better separated and structurally produces more reusable granulate (granules that can be used as raw material for new products). This means that less new granulate is needed, which reduces CO2 emissions – necessary for the production of new granulate – and the demand for natural resources such as oil.

Better maintenance means less energy waste

Because about 70% of all heating and cooling installations do not work properly, there is often a poor indoor climate and waste of (energy) costs. This is shown by research by TNO. In this pilot, Intrakoop works together with healthcare organizations, installers and external knowledge partners towards a sustainable (maintenance) contract for these installations. This standard contract must comply with NEN and ISSO legislation and guidelines and be usable for all healthcare organizations. In this way it contributes to the ultimate goal of this pilot: less energy consumption and CO2 emissions, but also more comfort and quality of the indoor climate in healthcare organizations.

The Climate-neutral and circular procurement program is financed, among other things, from the climate envelope of the national government and is part of the Green Deal Sustainable Care. In addition to these three pilots, it includes workshops on climate-neutral and circular procurement and the conference Sustainable purchasing in healthcare on March 4, 2021, which Intrakoop organizes together with VWS, Milieu Platform Zorg, MVO Nederland and Nevi.

Training for dog breeders for the first time as an online event – Insurance for Pets

Usually dog breeders from all over Germany come to the Kursaal in Bad Bocklet.

The panel of experts at the online breeders’ day also answered questions from the connected participants. Photo: Jana Rösner / Laboklin

The veterinary diagnostic laboratory Laboklin, located in Bad Kissingen, would normally have welcomed the dog breeders who had come from all over Germany to the Kursaal in Bad Bocklet on a weekend. Due to the corona pandemic, Dr. Elisabeth Müller, owner and managing director of Laboklin, announced that she was going to forego the face-to-face event this year and instead offer dog breeders a day of further training as an online event.

The whole organization presented the team with new challenges around the Breeder’s Day. A separate homepage was created for this event (which served as a contact point for the breeders. The breeders could follow the main program on this page, as well as the three subject-specific seminars in the afternoon.

In addition to the varied specialist lectures, a Labogen exhibition stand and a panel of experts were also offered to the participants. Elisabeth Müller discussed current issues with the speakers present. The participants’ questions that they could ask in the chat were also addressed.

Personal contact with the dog breeders in particular had to give way. Many of the breeders who came in previous years have remained loyal to Laboklin and have taken part in the online event – and in addition, Laboklin has also approached many breeders who would otherwise not have made the further trip to Bad Kissingen.

Technical lectures and workshops

According to its own information, Laboklin put together highly informative specialist lectures and workshops with the online breeders’ day concept. A total of around 330 participants have registered for this event. More than 100 breeders from all over Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Belgium listened to the lectures. In addition, more than 200 breeders will subsequently receive a link for the recording via email.

Dr. Anne Posthoff, specialist veterinarian for small and domestic animals, gave a lecture on the subject of « Get pregnant – stay pregnant, then it will work with the puppies », which met with great interest from the online audience due to her professional competence and good reputation, said Laboklin.

In addition to medical and genetic topics, the lectures also dealt with legal aspects: Kristina Trahms, attorney for dog law from Viersen, provided information on breeder liability and drafting purchase contracts. By the way, a date for the next breeders ‘conference has already been set: The seventh breeders’ conference will take place on September 19, 2021. It remains to be seen whether it will be a purely online event like this year, or whether the dog breeders will be able to welcome each other again in Bad Bocklet. The main topic here will be « Everything about the puppy ». red

Confinement : le nouveau totalitarisme – Insurance for Pets

5 months after adopting his dog Oat, Kelly Osbourne paid tribute to her on social networks. For the British actress and singer, the presence of the quadruped by her side has considerably helped her through the Covid-19 crisis.

At the height of the coronavirus pandemic that continues to shake the world, many families and single people have resorted topet adoption in order to live better isolation. While this trend has given rise to serious overruns (scams, abandonments, questionable adoption requests …), it has also allowed a multitude of dogs of leave shelters to join their new homes.

Oat is one of those canids adopted during the confinement. This female dog was by a celebrity, the London artist Kelly Osbourne as it happens. She has been part of her family since the month ofavril.

His company was extremely precious for the young woman who, in return, offered him comfort, security and love.

It is therefore to signify his gratitude and his attachment that the 35-year-old actress, singer and fashion designer posted, on September 25, a photo on Instagram where they both appear in a moment of great tenderness.

The publication is accompanied by a beautiful tribute : « I wake up every day trying to see the positive side to this mess that we are all going through. Today, I am so grateful to # RONA * because without it, I would never have adopted Oat! She is the light of my life !!! What is worth your recognition today? »

Also read: A family decides to create an unusual artistic barrier for their dog obsessed with the outdoors. The result makes passers-by howl with laughter!

Initially, it was about Kelly Osbourne keep it only as provisional, while waiting to find him a adoptive family. The artist and the bitch, however, have become so attached to each other that she decided to adopt it herself, as reported 20 Minutes.

* « RONA » is an English slang term used to designate Covid-19

Garden. Ecological corridors, urban network: Brussels leads by example – Insurance for Pets

In Belgium, the flowered facades are part of the ecological corridors. (ISABELLE MORAND / RADIO FRANCE / FRANCE INFO)

Contaminated rivers or soils, abandoned industrial waste… Do you live near a polluted site?

An ecological corridor consists of connecting reservoirs of biodiversity. To put it simply, it involves planting hedges, flowers, and vegetating the edges of streets, roads or railways, to ensure the sustainability of natural environments and strengthen biodiversity. We also use the term ecological mesh.

Brussels is one of the pioneer cities. The Belgian capital has been working on these corridors for 30 years. Bernard Cwiek is a manufacturer of insect hotels. He works with communities and individuals.

« The first idea to connect the parks to each other was to work on the highways and national roads that go into town but also on the sides of the railways. We learned to work differently, differently than by using pesticides, herbicides and insecticides.

Plants are the link between all spaces. Fauna circulates between the different places. Without the ecological mesh, the hedgehog gets run over on the road, because he can often do nothing other than cross roads! «

Ecological networking is a network that has proven itself. This system is almost completed in Brussels. In addition, all new constructions and projects must be designed with sustainable development and biodiversity in mind, including in terms of planting in private homes.

Gone are therefore the mono-specific hedges made up only of thuja, for example. It’s ugly, and above all it’s a disaster for biodiversity.

In Brussels, we are organizing to help, encourage individuals to plant plants more suited to this urban ecological network. Every year, at Sainte-Catherine, on November 25, there is a free distribution of trees and shrubs to plant in your garden or in pots: “Individuals are now very careful about everything biodiversity, and they are keen to participate in this concept.

Each year, more than 100,000 trees and shrubs are distributed in Wallonia. The municipalities are also playing the game, and supplementing with distributions of honey plants. Individuals sometimes line up for an hour or two to pick up a plant to put in their garden. They are involved, that’s great! «

Bernard Cwiek sets up his insect hotels every year here and there, in parks, gardens, and even in cemeteries. For him, this is the tip of the iceberg. Its insect hotels encourage us to take an interest in what is happening under our feet and around us: they make it possible to raise awareness among decision-makers and citizens. And it works.

In Belgium, many municipalities are now following the example of Brussels.

Adapted barn lighting improves pigs’ welfare – Insurance for Pets

Pigs feel better with the right lighting in the stables. The Westford slaughterhouse in IJsselstein and pig farm De Hoeve BV in Valkenswaard are therefore investigating in their project ‘Enlighted Pigs’ how light can best be used for a better welfare of their animals.

The project is in line with the cabinet’s plans, which wants the Netherlands to be a leader in sustainable circular agriculture by 2030. This includes the reuse of waste, but also animal-friendly livestock farming.

Light affects mood

It is already known that light influences people’s productivity and mood. The influence of light on animal welfare, on the other hand, has been studied to a limited extent. In their project, the companies want to find out how factors such as intensity and color of light play a role in animal welfare, the environment and ultimately the operating result.

The project

The companies want to develop a technique of stable lighting that is best for the animals. That lighting concept must eventually be included in the standard monitoring system. This system measures, among other things, the temperature and air quality in the barn and then adjusts them for the best possible climate.

The companies work together with the Animal Production Systems chair group of Wageningen University & Research (WUR). This learning group focuses on sustainable livestock farming and animal welfare. The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) is funding the research.

The lighting systems used in the study come from Signify, formerly Philips Lighting. Signify also supplies smart sensors for lighting adjustment.

Pig farm De Hoeve BV

Pig company De Hoeve BV has carried out several projects in the field of sustainability. For example, in 2017 the company started a project to achieve an optimal stable climate. This investigation not only measures the temperature of the house, but also the CO2 and oxygen content and the presence of ammonia and particulate matter. Pig farmers can use this data to create a better environment for the animals.

The Mono Digester project started in 2016. The aim of that project was to realize an energy-neutral pig farm. With the mono digester energy can be generated with manure from the pigs. Fresh manure is used for this, which also limits the development of methane.

Three rabbits murdered and one missing in Wijk aan Zee: « A very sick mind » – Insurance for Pets

WIJK AAN ZEE – In Wijk aan Zee three rabbits were killed last week by what local residents describe as ‘a sick spirit’. The rabbits were taken from their cages, killed and put back. The police say that this should have been done by a human, but are still trying to get a finger on the matter.

Rick Spijker lives with his family in the heart of Wijk aan Zee. His daughter found the family’s two rabbits dead in their cage last Thursday morning. « I immediately went to bury them, because my daughter was very upset. We actually thought it was a fox, so we didn’t think about it any further. »

The rabbits, Hops and Isabelle, had been horribly killed. Thinking back to that morning, Rick describes how the scene looked almost as if it had been staged. The cage in which Hops and Isabelle were housed was covered with a net, especially because Wijk aan Zee is known for the number of wild animals that roam there.

Local residents

Rick does not think about a possible culprit until he reads the message from his neighbors on Facebook. On Friday morning they found their rabbit Frits in a similar way in the loft. The family wants to anonymously tell their story to NH Nieuws.

« The rabbits are really part of the family. I can’t explain this to my children, they don’t understand anything about it. » According to these local residents, someone took their rabbit, killed it at another location and then put it back in the cage. No blood was found in the garden, which would have been the case if a fox had caught the animals.

Besides the loss of Frits, the family has lost their other rabbit, Saar, since that evening. Saar is a Teddy Widder rabbit, a special kind of long-haired purebred rabbit. The family therefore hopes that she has been seen somewhere in the village since the last report.

Text continues below photo

« A witness saw a white-gray rabbit in the neighborhood at 8.15pm on Thursday evening. Two cars have stopped in front of the rabbit and we really want to speak to the people who stopped. Maybe they can help us get her home again. fetch.  » According to the family, there is a good chance that someone has spotted the rabbit in the village: on Thursday evening after eight, the residents of Wijk aan Zee put their waste bin outside, and at 10:30 it started hailing. They call on people who live in their neighborhood, around the intersection of the Relweg and the Tappenbeckstraat, to look out for their beloved family member.

Law enforcement

Although the families indicate that they receive a lot of support from the police, who have already visited the floor four times, they doubt whether there is enough manpower to find out what happened to the rabbits. The family, wishing to remain anonymous, says, « It is horrible for our children, and our sense of security has been affected. This is a dent in our confidence in humanity. » They especially want to give local residents to be extra alert to their pets.

Spokesman Erwin Sintenie of the Noord-Holland police confirms to NH Nieuws that it is strongly taken into account that the rabbits were killed at the hands of humans. In addition, they still assume that the same perpetrator is responsible. People who have tips or information can contact the police.

Fur farms are on the collar – Insurance for Pets

In France, fur farms are to be banned from 2025. The French Fur Association criticized the ?? unprecedented ?? Ban sharp.

In France, fur farms are to be banned from 2025. Environment Minister Barbara Pompili announced this last week. From now on, no new farms may be opened. Society’s relationship with wildlife has changed, Pompili said. The animals are no longer seen only as threats or prey, but are increasingly understood as fellow creatures that must be respected and protected. This development is the hallmark of a society that is increasingly aware of its responsibility to nature and its dependence on the environment.

In addition to the ban on fur farms, there are plans to limit the use of wild animals in traveling circuses and the keeping of dolphins and killer whales, and also to improve the keeping conditions in zoos. The French Fur Association (FFF) sharply criticized the « unprecedented » ban. An industry and its jobs would be sacrificed to meet the demands of a social minority. The association announced that it would bring the ban to the French constitutional court. According to the FFF, there are currently four mink farms across France, with 2,500 jobs connected.

The German Animal Welfare Office urged Federal Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner to also ban fur farms. According to the organization, the farms in Austria, Belgium and Great Britain have not been allowed for years. In Germany, the last mink farm was closed in North Rhine-Westphalia last year; without a ban, however, a business could open again at any time.

Discovering the night world with the National Park – Insurance for Pets

A phenomenon linked to the systematic lighting of towns, roads and villages, light pollution very significantly affects the biology of living species by modifying the natural alternation of day and night. The impacts of light pollution are multiple: sky observation, energy consumption, flora and fauna, human health. For more than ten years, the Pyrenees National Park has been committed to reducing light pollution. In particular, he became the co-sponsor of the Pic du Midi International Starry Sky Reserve alongside the Hautes-Pyrénées SDE and the Pic du Midi union. It has also defined a sensitivity threshold for certain nocturnal species beyond which light pollution has a strong impact on their activity, with the help of the Hautes-Pyrénées CPIE and the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels.

Thus, in order to make as many people as possible aware of the beauty of the night and the issue of light pollution, the Pyrenees National Park is offering a series of free events on Saturday October 10, accessible to all.

In Val d’Azun, in Arrens-Marsous at 7:30 p.m .: « Animal Nights » animation to discover the nightlife of animals and reflect on the impacts of light pollution and ways to reduce them.

If the weather permits, a night walk around the village, or failing that, screening of the documentary “Where have the fireflies gone?” By Corentin Kimeneau, followed by a debate.

In the Luz Valley, Grust, 6:30 p.m .: conference led by a ranger monitor from the Pyrenees National Park, on the life of nocturnal wildlife as well as the consequences of light pollution on their behavior. Then discovery of the mysteries of the starry sky in the company of the Procyon astronomical association.

In the Cauterets valley, at the Maison du Parc national des Pyrénées at 6 p.m., screening of the documentary « Where are the Fireflies? » by Corentin Kimeneau, followed by a fun activity to learn how to recognize the sounds of the night and the intervention of a guard monitor from the Pyrenees National Park on the impacts of artificial light on biodiversity.
